Technical Writing Instructor Handbook

Company: Virginia Tech See in résumé | See Higher Ed Teaching

Summary: This handbook provides technical writing instructors at Virginia Tech guidelines for teaching the online version (virtual campus) of an undergraduate course titled ENGL 3764: Technical Writing. This handbook also relates to the online lesson modules I created for the course.

Production: Because the Professional and Technical Writing program at Virginia Tech has a strong focus on Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA), I authored the handbook using DITA. Specifically, I used Oxygen XML Editor to author DITA-based content and then used Oxygen's default transformation options to output to multiple formats. The sample included here is Oxygen's default PDF output. Also note that the example syllabus described in the document is excluded from this portfolio sample.

Authorship: I was the sole author of this handbook.

Audience: The handbook's primary audience includes graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) and other instructors at Virginia Tech who are new to teaching the online version (virtual campus) of the ENGL 3764: Technical Writing course. The handbook is also useful for experienced instructors to help ensure they are meeting the English department's objectives for the course.
