How to Specify Root Keywords for a Google Ad Group

The root keywords for a campaign should describe the advertiser’s business, such as their products or services. You can create as many root keywords needed to adequately describe the advertiser’s business. The root keywords are then combined with geo-modifiers to create keywords.

What you should know:

  • By default, Geneva automatically creates and manages Google ad groups based on the corresponding Geneva editorial group settings. You therefore must only perform this procedure if you do not want to use the default Google ad groups created with your editorial groups.

  • Depending on your reseller account, WebVisible might perform this procedure for the campaigns created by your organization.

  • Any time you make changes to information in Geneva you should add a note and describe what the change is.

Before you begin:

  • You must have a valid Geneva user account with permission to edit Google ad groups.

  • You must disable the automanage feature for the Google ad group by clearing the Automanage check box.

  • Review our best practices to help ensure the keywords are effective and adhere to ad network standards.

Procedure:

  1. Access the Google ad group with the root keywords that you want to edit:

    1. Search for the campaign containing the associated Google ad group, and then click the campaign ID link for that campaign in the search results list. The Campaign Maintenance page opens, with the Campaign tab active.

    2. Click the Google Ad Grps tab.

    3. Click the Edit link next to the ad group’s title. The page refreshes with a form to edit the ad group.

  2. Click the Edit link next to the Keywords title in section 2. The page refreshes with a Keywords box that is available for editing keywords.

  3. Edit the keywords as follows:

    • Enter each keyword one per line in the Keywords box. You can type multiple words on one line if the keyword you are adding is a phrase (for example, family dentist). Be sure to add a space between words in the phrase.

    • To add a keyword, add it on a new line

    • To edit a keyword, highlight that keyword and type the new text.

    • To remove a keyword, delete the line containing that keyword.

    • To use a negative keyword, add a minus sign (-) in front of the keyword.

  4. When you have finished adding or editing keywords in the Keyword box, click OK. The page refreshes to the original form to edit the ad group.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Click Save.
